Learn From Your Games

Course puzzles build the patterns; your own games show which patterns are not working yet. Connect Lichess or Chess.com, import your recent games, and the tactics you missed, along with the ones you let your opponent have, become puzzles in your review queue.

Why your own games

Why your own games?

Working a course in repetition cycles is what builds tactical pattern recognition, and it stays the main training here. This sits alongside it, not in place of it.

A position from your own game got there because of the openings you play and the decisions you make, which means you are likely to reach something like it again. Training it is practice for your games rather than for the average game at your rating.

Training, not reports

Every mistake becomes a puzzle

Most platforms end at the report. They tell you what happened in your games, and what to do about it is left to you.

ChessWoodie is not built to report on your games. It extracts the lessons in them and puts those into a training flow: every tactic it finds becomes a puzzle you solve yourself, and it stays in your review queue on a schedule until the pattern holds. Knowing that you keep missing knight forks changes nothing. Solving twenty of them does.

How it works

How it works

01 Connect

Connect your account

Chess.com needs only your username. Lichess uses secure authorisation, and you can disconnect either one at any time.

02 Import

Import your games

You start each import yourself, whenever you want one. It reads your last 20 finished games and skips anything an earlier import already covered.

03 Analyse

Tactics detection

Stockfish analyses each game for winning tactics you did not play, and the tactical opportunities you have given your opponent. Small inaccuracies are ignored, so you only get positions where there was a real tactic to find.

04 Review

Review queue

Keep the ones worth training and they join your Mistake Review queue. Solve one and its next review moves further out; miss it and it comes back the next day.

What you'll see

What you will see

  • · The position exactly as it stood in your game, with you to move
  • · Who you played and which platform it came from, with a link to the full game
  • · The motif it turns on, so you can see which patterns keep catching you

Tactics you allowed are shown from your opponent's side, so you practise spotting the chance you gave away.

Your data

Your data is secure

We only read your finished games. You can disconnect either account at any time, and unlinking removes the games and puzzles that came from it. Full details are in the privacy policy.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which platforms are supported?
+
Lichess and Chess.com. You can connect both at once and choose which one to import from. The puzzles land in the same place either way, each marked with the platform it came from.
How many games does one import look at?
+
Your last 20 finished games. Games that an earlier import already analysed are skipped, so each import spends its effort on what is new.
What counts as a missed tactic?
+
Two things. A winning tactic that was available to you and that you did not play, and a tactical opportunity you have given your opponent, whether or not they found it. Small inaccuracies are ignored, so you only get positions where there was a real tactic to find.
How is this different from a game review on Lichess or Chess.com?
+
A game review shows you the better move. Here the move is hidden and you have to find it, and the position returns on a spaced schedule instead of appearing once. Being told about a pattern and practising it are different things.
Do I need Premium?
+
No. The free plan includes one import a month. Premium removes the limit, so you can import as often as you play.
