How is ChessWoodie different from Chess.com or Lichess puzzles?
Most puzzle trainers emphasize novelty: you solve a puzzle once and immediately move on to a new position.
ChessWoodie focuses on pattern recognition through repetition. Instead of solving thousands of unrelated puzzles once, you repeatedly train the same set of puzzles across multiple cycles so tactical motifs become easier to recognize.

What is the Woodpecker Method?
The Woodpecker Method is a tactics training approach described by GM Axel Smith and GM Hans Tikkanen.
Instead of constantly solving new puzzles, you repeatedly solve the same set of positions and aim to complete them faster with each cycle. Hans Tikkanen credited this training approach as a key factor in achieving three Grandmaster norms in seven weeks.

What is the best app for practicing the Woodpecker Method?
ChessWoodie is built specifically for the Woodpecker Method. It is the only tactics trainer designed around the method from the ground up, with PPM tracking as a first-class metric across every cycle.
Most other puzzle apps, Chess.com, Lichess, ChessTempo are built around solving new puzzles continuously. They were not designed for the fixed-set repetition cycle structure the Woodpecker Method requires. ChessWoodie handles the course structure, cycle management, and PPM tracking automatically so you focus entirely on solving.

Why does repetition training improve chess tactics?
Strong players recognize tactical patterns quickly because they have seen similar positions many times before.
Repetition training strengthens this pattern recognition. By solving the same puzzles across multiple cycles, the tactical ideas become easier to identify, helping you spot similar patterns faster in new positions during real games.

Do puzzles repeat?
Yes. Repetition is the core idea behind the training system.
When you create a course, ChessWoodie selects a fixed set of puzzles from a database of more than three million tactical positions. You then solve that same set repeatedly across multiple cycles to strengthen pattern recognition.

What is PPM (Puzzles Per Minute)?
PPM measures how quickly you recognize the correct tactical idea.
Because ChessWoodie focuses on pattern recognition, increasing PPM usually indicates that tactical motifs are becoming easier to recognize.

What rating level is ChessWoodie for?
Pattern recognition is important at every level of chess.
While repetition-based training is especially helpful for beginner and intermediate players, it can also benefit advanced players. The Woodpecker Method itself has been used successfully even at the grandmaster level.

Do I need to configure courses?
Yes. ChessWoodie allows you to configure your training course based on your goals.
When creating a course you can choose the difficulty level, number of puzzles, number of repetition cycles, and session duration, allowing you to tailor the training structure to your available time.

How many puzzles should I put in a course?
This depends on your available training time.
A set of 200 puzzles is a practical starting point for most players training 20 to 30 minutes per day. It is large enough that repetition builds genuine pattern recognition rather than position memorisation, and small enough that the first cycle completes within one to two weeks.
Players with an hour or more per day can work with larger sets, up to 1,000 puzzles on Premium. And they should, because larger sets produce deeper pattern recognition gains.

When should I increase the difficulty of my puzzles?
If Cycle 1 of a new course feels too easy, it may be time to increase the difficulty.
As a rough guideline, consider moving up if you consistently reach 8+ PPM with around 80% accuracy in Cycle 1. The goal is to train puzzles that still require some thought. If most solutions are immediately obvious, increasing the difficulty will introduce more complex combinations of tactical patterns to recognize.
