01

Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using ChessWoodie (available at www.chesswoodie.com and app.chesswoodie.com), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

These terms apply to all users, whether you use the free tier or a paid Premium subscription.

02

The Service

ChessWoodie is a chess training application that provides spaced-repetition puzzle sessions, mistake review, performance tracking, and related training tools. It is developed and operated by a single independent developer.

The service consists of two parts: a public website at www.chesswoodie.com and a training application at app.chesswoodie.com.

Free tier

The free tier is permanently free with no expiry date and no credit card required. Core training features are available to all free users.

Premium tier

Premium unlocks additional features including engine analysis on mistake review, expanded training insights, and other features as described on the Pricing page. Premium features are subject to change over time, though we will not remove access to features already available to active subscribers without reasonable notice.

03

Accounts

You can use ChessWoodie as a guest without creating an account, though some features require registration. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account.

You may sign in using your Lichess or Google account. By doing so, you grant us access to the basic profile information provided by those services. You may not use another person's account without their permission.

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, engage in abusive behavior, or attempt to misuse the service.

Account deletion

You may delete your account at any time via the Account Deletion page. Deletion is permanent and removes your training data, progress history, and profile information. If you have an active Premium subscription, cancelling it before deleting your account is recommended to avoid future charges.

04

Subscription & Billing

Premium subscriptions are available on a monthly ($6/month) or annual ($60/year) basis. Prices are inclusive of applicable taxes where required.

All billing is processed by Lemon Squeezy, our Merchant of Record. By subscribing, you are entering a billing relationship with Lemon Squeezy, who handles payment processing, invoicing, and tax compliance. Their terms and privacy policy also apply to your payment information.

Subscriptions auto-renew at the end of each billing period unless cancelled before the renewal date. You will not be charged more than the amount shown at checkout.

Note on price changes: We reserve the right to adjust pricing for new subscriptions in the future. Any price change will be communicated with reasonable advance notice. See Section 6 for Founding Member price protection.

05

Free Trial

New Premium subscribers receive a 7-day free trial on both the monthly and annual plans. You will not be charged during the trial period.

If you cancel before the trial ends, you will not be charged. If you do not cancel, your subscription will begin and your payment method will be billed at the end of the trial period.

Free trials are available once per user. Creating multiple accounts to access additional trials is not permitted and may result in account termination.

06

Founding Member Price Lock

Users who subscribe to Premium before 31 May 2026 are designated Founding Members. Founding Members receive a permanent price lock — their subscription price at the time of signup will never increase for as long as they maintain an active subscription.

The price lock applies to the plan type selected at signup (monthly or annual). Switching between plan types may reset the founding member price to the then-current rate for the new plan.

The price lock is tied to the subscription, not the account. If a Founding Member cancels their subscription and later resubscribes, the founding member rate is forfeited and standard pricing applies.

07

Cancellation & Refunds

You may cancel your Premium subscription at any time through your account settings or through Lemon Squeezy's customer portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you retain access to Premium features until that date.

Refunds

Refund requests are handled by Lemon Squeezy as our Merchant of Record. As a general policy:

  • Refunds may be requested within 7 days of a charge by contacting us at developer@chesswoodie.com.
  • Refunds are issued at our discretion. We are generally reasonable about genuine mistakes or accidental renewals.
  • Refunds are not provided for partial subscription periods already used.
Downgrading to free: Cancelling Premium downgrades your account to the free tier. Your training data and progress history are retained. Engine analysis and other Premium features become inaccessible until you resubscribe.

08

Acceptable Use

ChessWoodie is a personal training tool. You agree not to:

  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or extract data from the service in bulk
  • Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to interact with the service in a way that places unreasonable load on our infrastructure
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the service or its underlying systems
  • Create multiple accounts to circumvent free trial limitations or access restrictions
  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose

Because ChessWoodie is a single-player training tool with no multiplayer or public chat features, most community standards that apply to chess platforms do not apply here. There is no fair play policy — there is no opponent to cheat against.

09

Intellectual Property

All content, design, code, and materials on ChessWoodie — including but not limited to the training algorithm, puzzle sets, interface design, and branding — are the property of ChessWoodie's developer and are protected by applicable copyright and intellectual property laws.

You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the service for personal, non-commercial chess training purposes. This license does not include the right to copy, redistribute, or create derivative works based on ChessWoodie's content.

Your training data (your puzzle history, ratings, and session records) belongs to you. You may request an export or deletion of your data at any time.

10

Disclaimers

ChessWoodie is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access, error-free operation, or that the service will meet your specific training expectations.

Chess improvement depends on many factors beyond any single tool. We do not guarantee specific rating improvements or training outcomes from using ChessWoodie.

We will make reasonable efforts to maintain uptime and data integrity, but as a solo-developed product, occasional downtime for maintenance or unexpected outages may occur.

11

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, ChessWoodie's developer shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including but not limited to loss of data or interruption of access.

In any event, our total liability to you for any claim arising from use of the service shall not exceed the amount you paid for Premium in the three months preceding the claim.

These limitations apply regardless of the theory of liability and even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

12

Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will make reasonable efforts to notify active users — either by email or by a notice within the application.

Your continued use of ChessWoodie after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms. If you disagree with a material change, you may cancel your subscription and stop using the service.
